'Displayed great gallantry and devotion to duty during operations of 15th September. Laid telephone wire from battery position in T7 to Infantry Battalion well forward in Switch Trench which enabled battery to open fire effectively on its arrival. This was done under very heavy rifle and shellfire. Line was repaired several times during the day by this officer. On Sptember 24th this Officer volunteered to take command of volunteer detachment, and "man" captured guns in N32c to disable a "tank" in "No Man's Land". This entailed reconnoitring and moving guns to a favourable position, which he successfully carried out. On the morning of the 25th he disabled the "tank" and also fired 100 rounds into hostile trench in enfilade. These operations were carried out at request of 7th D.A. The position of the guns was 700 yards from hostile lines. Lieut Carmichael was wounded but continued to carry out his duties. During this operation six of his detachment were wounded. It was necessary to withdraw detachments several times owing to hostile shellfire, but Lieut Carmichael returned each time, and completed his work. At Bois Grenier from 7th July to 5th August 1916, Lieut Carmichael, with a Trench Mortar Battery, was attached to the 56th Battalion A.I.F. in the trenches; during the time mentioned he did excellent work in silencing all German Trench Mortar Batteries opposite his sector at various times, also in gaining superiority of fire over them, although frequently under their hevy fire, including Minenwerfers. He is very highly recommended by Lieut-Colonel A.H. Scott, Commanding 56th Battalion, A.I.F.'
