'On 5th April 1918 near Mailly Maillet, the Battery, the Observation Post, and surrounding areas were most persistently and heavily shelled from 7.30 am to 3.30 pm. Throughout this day, this N.C.O. maintained constant communication within the Battery, to Brigade Headquarters, and forward to the F.O.O., despite the continuous shelling. His efforts helped considerably to maintain fire in the enemy trenches during a critical period, and his sense of responsibility and devotion to duty were most marked. On many other occasions, this N.C.O. has distinguished himself by his coolness and determination whilst on duty with the F.O.O.'s of the Battery.'
