Military Medal 'In "No Man's Land" near Armentieres, night of the 3rd/4th November 1916. This non-commissioned officer took part in the successful raid carried out on the night of the 3rd/4th November by a party of the 2nd Auckland Battalion under 2nd Lieutenant Hally against German trenches at the Pont Ballot salient east of Houplines. He acted with great dash and courage and was of much assistance to the officer commanding raid in leading the party into the trench. By his example he encouraged his men to enter and bomb the German dugouts, keeping his party well in hand until the signal was given to withdraw.'
