Military Medal

'Operations east of Ypres. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On the night of 19/20th November on the Becelare Sector, Pte Campbell was a member of a patrol which was attacked by bombers and was fired on by the enemy with a machine gun from a distance of 30 yards, which badly wounded Pte Dicken, another member of the Patrol, smashing his leg. Although Pte Campbell was himself severely wounded he very gallantly picked up his comrade and carried him a distance of 100 yards to safety under a very heavy rifle and machine gun fire. His coolness and gallant action under very heavy fire was the means of bringing his comrade back to our lines instead of leaving him in the hands of the enemy. On previous occasions Pte Campbell has shown the same high courage and devotion to duty.'
