War service: Western Front Embarked Wellington, 5 April 1917; disembarked Devonport, England, 11 June 1917, and marched in to Sling Camp. Proceeded overseas to France, 6 July 1917; joined 2nd Bn, Otago Infantry Regiment, in the field, 11 August 1917. Reported missing in action, 12 October 1917; Court of Enquiry, 19 November 1917, confirmed fate as killed in action, Belgium, 12 October 1917. 45150 Pte W.G. SCARLETT, 14th Company, 2nd Bn, Otago Infantry Regiment, stated: 'I saw Campbell on the morning of the 12th Oct. 1917 during the operation at Belle Vue Spur coming back wounded & when just opposite me he was sniped & fell over into a shell hole.
