'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. In the attack of 30th August and 1st September, on Bancourt he, while acting as company runner, displayed great bravery, and carried many messages through artillery and machine-gun fire. By his courage and coolness it was possible to keep in touch with Battalion when no other means of communication were available. He has consistently done splendid work as a runner.'
