Disembarked Suez, Egypt, 8 March 1916. Posted to 12th (Nelson) Company, 2nd Bn, Canterbury Infantry Regiment, Moascar, 8 March 1916; transferred to 12th (Nelson) Company, 1st Bn, Canterbury Infantry Regiment, Moascar, 29 March 1916.

Embarked Port Said, Egypt, for France, 6 April 1916.

Wounded in action, 3 July 1916 (gun shot wound, right arm), and admitted to No 3 NZ Field Ambulance, 4 July 1916; transferred to No 3 Canadian General Hospital, Boulogne, 5 July 1916; evacuated to England and admitted to No 2 London General Hospital, Chelsea, 6 July 1916; transferred to No 1 NZ General Hospital, Brockenhurst, 12 July 1916.

Found guilty, 17 August 1916, of being absent without leave from 10:00am, 13 August 1916, till 11:10pm, 15 August 1916, and awarded 14 days' confined to barracks and foreits three days' pay.

Discharged to NZ Command Depot, Codford, 21 August 1916.

Declared an illegal absentee by Court of Enquiry, Sling Camp, 6 November 1916; arrested by Military Police, 9 November 1916.

Found guilty by District Court Martial, 11 December 1916, and awarded 42 days' detention and loss of 53 days' pay.

Taken on strength of 3rd (Reserve) Battalion, Canterbury Infantry Regiment.

Wounded in action (second occasion), 12 October 1917 (gun shot wound, left thigh, severe), and admitted to No 1 NZ Field Ambulance; transferred same day to No 3 Canadian Casualty Clearing Station; to 14th General Hospital, 13 October 1917; evacuated to England, 18 October 1917, and admitted same day to King George Hospital, Stamford Street, London; transferred to No 1 NZ General Hospital, Brockenhurst, 10 December 1917.

Classified unfit by Medical Board, 18 January 1918, and placed on NZ Roll.

Commenced return to New Zealand from Liverpool on board HMNZT 'Maunganui', 2 February 1918; arrived New Zealand, 16 March 1918.

Found guilty, 9 July 1918, of being absent without leave from the King George V Military Hospital, Rotorua, from 15 June 1918 to 2 July 1918: forfeited 17 days' pay.

Found guilty, 30 July 1918, of conduct to the prejudice of good order and military discipline, namely, drinking whiskey while under medical treatment and for fighting and disorderly conduct at the King George V Military Hospital, Rotorua, on 24 July 1918: awarded two days' hospital stoppages and seven days' confined to hospital (to rank as confined to barracks).

Discharged (no longer physically fit for War Service on account of wounds received in action), 16 December 1919.
