War service: Egypt, Western Front Embarked Wellington, 6 May 1916; disembarked Suez, 22 June 1916. Embarked Alexandria, 26 July 1916; disembarked Southampton, England, 7 March 1916. Proceeded overseas to France, 28 August 1916; joined 2nd Bn, Otago Infantry Regiment, in the field, 22 July 1916, and posted to 10th Company. On leave to United Kingdom, 21 September 1917; rejoined unit from leave, 6 October 1917. Reported missing, 12 October 1917. Court of Enquiry, 19 November 1917, concluded: 'Missing, believed killed.' Statement, 29959 Pte R.E. OATS, 10th Company, 2nd Bn, Otago Infantry Regiment: 'I saw Bulman at the assembly point previous to the attack on Belle Vue Spur, 12 Oct. I did not see him again but a man told me that he was killed well up the spur close to the enemy wire. Owing to the heavy enemy fire it was very difficult to search this part of the country.'
