Mentioned in Despatches

'On the British Front at Armentieres. This officer did most excellent work in organising and training a raiding party of the 2nd. New Zealand Infantry Brigade at Armentieres in the month of June 1916. He displayed great pluck in carrying out preliminary reconnaissances in "No Man?s Land", right up to the enemy's wire, and on the night of the raid he led his men very gallantly until he received the wound from which he died 48 hours later. The raid was quite successful, due entirely to the untiring energy and devotion to duty with which Captain Alley had carried out the training of his men.'
