Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On the 8th October 1918 in the advance on Lesdain, this man who is No. 1 on his Lewis gun handled his gun magnificently, being always in the van. He was responsible for silencing an enemy machine gun on the right of the Factory in front of the Masnieres Line. Later on he encountered two machine guns on the final objective and at once got into action,
engaging first one gun and then shifting his position and engaging the other. It was largely due to his action that the Company was not held up. He took part in the final assault of the Sunken Road, rushed up the opposite bank and some 400 yards on to the slope on the other side. Here he came into action again and inflicted very severe casualties on the retreating enemy as subsequent investigation proved. It was with difficulty that he could be stopped from following up still further although he was then far past his objective. His initiative and tactical insight were on a level with his enthusiasm and cheeriness.'
