'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the action at Mill Cross on the 2nd September 1918, an enemy machine gun was causing a lot of trouble from behind some huts, and holding up the advance, when Private Allen took a Lewis gun and crawled out alone under heavy fire into some long grass, and worked his way round to a flank, and succeeded in putting the enemy machine gun out of action, thus enabling the advance to proceed.'
