'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On August 30th, 1918, during our attack east of Bapaume a gap was formed in our Infantry. With his Section of guns he quickly grasped the situation, and though under a heavy machine-gun fire from the enemy, he skillfully placed his guns in the gap, silenced a number of the enemy's guns, and inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy Infantry. His bold handling of his guns undoubtedly saved a doubtful situation and restricted the line and the flank.'
