Military Medal 'Action in front of Belle Vue Spur, West of Passchendaele, 12th October 1917 and following days. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the above operations Private Young was engaged as a Brigade runner between the Brigade Signal Station and the Battalion Headquarters. For three days and nights he carried
messages up to the Battalion under heavy shell and machine-gun fire. He displayed great initiative and bravery, finding his way across swampy and shell swept ground, and the way in which he carried out his duty was an example to all others. He never once failed to get through with messages, and carried out his duty in the most cheerful manner imaginable.'
