War service: Egypt, Western Front Embarked Wellington, 5 February 1916; disembarked Suez, 13 March 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, France, 7 April 1916. Attached to Light Trench Mortar Battery, Estaires, 5 May 1916. Killed in action, 23 November 1916. Death caused by premature explosion of a 3" Stokes shell in front line trench: no blame attachable. '23/25 Lt J.L. McAlister stated he was in charge of the 2 guns firing in the right of 3rd Bde Sector on afternoon of 23-11-16. He was not present when a premature explosion took place whereby 3 men were killed & 3 wounded. The gun barrel was torn in two at a place which would indicate that the shell exploded immediately at the bottom of the barrel. The gun team were all experienced men & the usual examination of the shells was made. No trace was found of shell or cartridge. Repeated warnings have been given to the Infantry to keep clear of the gun emplacements during firing. Cartridge used was lower range cartridge (red) which had been reported as unsatisfactory.'
