War service: Egypt, Western Front Disembarked Suez, 15 March 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 27 May 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France (date not recorded); marched in to Base Depot, Etaples, 9 June 1916. Embarked for England, 13 June 1916, and marched in to Sling Camp; posted to D Company, 16 June 1916. Proceeded overseas to France, 20 October 1916; joined 1st Bn, NZ Rifle Brigade, in the field, 4 November 1916, anmd posted to D Company. Transferred to 4th Bn, and posted to C Company, 8 December 1916. Wounded in action, 12 March 1917 (slight); remained at duty. Wounded, 13 May 1917 (self-inflicted in the left foot through negligently handling a revolver), and admitted to 3rd NZ Field Ambulance; transfererd to 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station, 17 May 1917; transferred to 2nd Army Special Hospital, 21 May 1917. Found guilty by Field General Court Martial, 28 May 1917, of when on Active Service wounding himself in the left foot through negligently handling a revolver: awarded 7 days' Field Punishment No 2. Rejoined unit, in the field, 29 July 1917. On leave to United Kingdom, 26 September 1917. Admitted to VD Section, No 3 NZ General Hospital, Codford, while on leave, 9 October 1917 (gonorrhoea); discharged to VD Convalescent Section, 6 February 1918; rejoined Bn, 30 April 1918. Found guilty, 25 April 1918, of (1) being absent without leave from 2 pm, 4 April, to 24 April 1918; (2) being in possession of an altered pass: forfeited 19 days' pay under Royal Warrant, and 19 days' pay gross. Found guilty, 26 February 1919, of being absent without leave: forfeited 4 days' pay and 4 days' pay under Royal Warrant. Commenced return to New Zealand from Liverpool on board HT 'Northumberland', 28 March 1919; discharged (termination of period of engagement), 7 June 1919.
