Proceeded overseas to France, 11 January 1918; joined 2nd Bn, Auckland Infantry Regiment, in the field, 22 February 1918.

Wounded in action, 27 March 1918 (gun shot wound, right hand), and admitted to No 1 NZ Field Ambulance; transferred to No 3 Canadian General Hospital, Etaples, 28 March 1918; to England, 30 March 1918, and admitted to No 2 NZ General Hospital, Walton-on-Thames; transferred to NZ Convalescent Hospital, Hornchurch, 29 April 1918.

Classified 'Unfit' by Medical Board, 23 May 1918, and placed on NZ Roll.

Commenced return to New Zealand from Plymouth on board HT 'Ionic', 24 August 1918; discharged (no longer physically fit for War Service on account of wounds received in action), 24 July 1919.
