'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He and four others attacked a strong enemy party who were holding the cellar of a building and, although greatly outnumbered, they killed twenty and drove the remainder from their position. He showed the greatest promptitude in taking command of the party after the Sergeant in charge had been wounded, and displayed great gallantry, only he and another man of his party being left unwounded.'
