'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On the morning of the 4th September 1918 in action near Ruyaulcourt this soldier's Company was held up by machine gun fire. Further progress was arrested by the fire at point blank range of 77 mm guns. Private Wilkinson pushed ahead in a very gallant manner and brought his Lewis gun into action on the enemy machine-gun (all but one of his section had by this time became casualties). He ably assisted the advance of the adjoining Battalion by silencing machine guns which had checked their progress. He showed great resource and ability in the tactical use of his gun. Later during the further progress of the day he went out to the forward slope of the hill under heavy and exposed machine gun and rifle fire and rescued a wounded man. He showed great courage during the operations and his conduct throughout has been highly commendable.'
