'Operations during Somme advance 22 August-12 September 1918. For conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty. During operation of his company on the 26th August during the attack on Mametz this NCO was in charge of two Lewis guns and showed great skill and initiative in the handling of his sections. He went forward at great personal risk under heavy enemy machine-gun fire and located enemy strong post. He then brought his guns up and opened fire and by skilful management and direction put the enemy to flight with considerable casualties, thereby enabling the attacking infantry who had been held up to continue their advance. Later in the same day his skilful employment of his guns silenced an enemy machine-gun which was causing casualties to advancing troops. His disregard for danger went far in encouraging the infantry and his action throughout the advance was meritorious.'
