'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. This Warrant Officer showed great gallantry and disregard for his personal safety in leading an attack in the trenches in rear of Messines on 7th June, and subsequently went round the posts continuously under shell fire, encouraging and assisting his men. He was instrumental in getting them food and water under difficult and dangerous circumstances. On his own initiative he pushed forward men and joining up with the Battalion of his flank.'
