Bronze Medal (Italy) 'On the night of 15th September 1916 after the attack and capture of Flers this NCO took charge of a patrol which went out well in advance of our front lines. He
displayed skill and resource in reconnoitring well forward at a time when the exact location and strength of the enemy was unknown and our own troops were busily engaged in consolidating their lines. The information gained by this patrol was of the utmost value to his Unit Commander.'
Source: London Gazette Date: Mentioned in Despatches 'For devotion to duty during the period 22nd September 1916 to 25th February 1917. This NCO has shown a splendid example to his men in the trenches, by his coolness and general bearing whilst under fire. During the Somme operations in
the latter part of September and October this NCO brought in wounded men from No Man?s Land while the same was under heavy artillery fire and right
throughout the operations did splendid work. In June last this NCO was in charge of a bombing post in Armentieres Sector. The enemy under cover of darkness attempted to raid our trenches and mainly through this NCO's coolness and gallantry the enemy was driven off with severe casualties. The strength of the enemy was estimated at 30 and our post under this NCO was only six. Since then
his general trench work has been excellent in every respect and is worthy of recognition.'
