'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on the 30th August during the attack on Bancourt. He displayed energy and decision in taking forward patrols when the flanking Battalion failed to join up. He patrolled across the gap and secured liaison with Company on the left moving continuously under heavy machine-gun fire. He crawled out in broad daylight and brought in a wounded man from a point very close to enemy machine-gun positions. This NCO behave in a fearless manner throughout.'
