Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in the field east of Bancourt on the morning of 31st August 1918. This NCO was acting as a platoon commander on the above date, when the enemy counter-attacked at dawn with tanks. His men were
surprised and disconcerted, but this NCO by his great personal courage and disregard of danger in moving about among his platoon under heavy machine gun and rifle fire, rallied, held and inspired his tired men to repel the enemy with heavy losses, thus saving a dangerous situation. He set a splendid example of devotion to duty during this and the previous day when his company sustained heavy casualties in an attack.'
