'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. In an attack on Bon Avis Ridge on September 29th 1918, the Corporal in command of this man's Lewis gun Section became a casualty and he immediately assumed command. He handled his section with great skill and gallantry and engaged and put out of action several enemy machine-guns, killing and capturing the crews. He showed great skill and initiative and set a splendid example to the men of his section.'
