'For gallantry and devotion to duty during operations around Bapaume on August 26th 1918 and following days. Rifleman Walles acted as Company Runner. When his company was occupying a line of isolated outposts, approach to which by day was
almost impossible by reason of machine-gun fire and sniping, he volunteered to carry to the posts an important message and by his skill and daring he successfully did so in spite of the dangerous nature of the task. Throughout the operations he
showed an admirable coolness and disregard for his personal safety and his prompt delivery of messages contributed in no small degree in the success of the operations.'
