War service: Western Front Embarked Wellington, 23 September 1916; reverted to Private at own request, 11 November 1916; disembarked Devonport, England, 18 November 1916, and marched into Sling Camp. Proceeded overseas to France, 9 December 1916; joined 2nd Bn, NZ Rifle Brigade, in the field, 7 January 1917, and posted to D Company. Detached to Brigade Headquarters, 10 March 1917; rejoined unit, 27 March 1917. Appointed Lance Corporal,8 October 1917. Reported missing, 12 October 1917. Court of Enquiry, 27 April 1918, concluded: 'Killed in action, 12 October 1917.' Medals: British War Medal, Victory Medal Public Trust Office, Wellington, wrote to Defence Department, 5 October 1920: Father 'states that the deceased assumed the name of Charles Walker owing to the fact of having twice previously enlisted, once under his correct name and once under an assumed name, and on both occasions he failed when ordered to proceed to Camp.' |
