On 12th October 1917 in the Battle in front of Belle Vue this non commissioned officer showed great determination in reorganising his Company and pushing home the attack when most of his Officers and senior NCOs had become casualties. He led the final assault, supervised the "digging in" and the consolidation of the positions captured. His total disregard for his personal safety was a fine example to his men.'
