Recommendations (Medals and Awards)

Military Cross

'For distinguished service in the field. (Gallipoli)'
Recommendation date: 28 January 1916

Distinguished Service Order

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He was in command of his battalion, which he handles with great ability during the four day?s severe fighting. He was continually with the advance guard while the enemy were retreating, and his accurate reports to brigade headquarters greatly contributed to the success of the operations. He repelled several determined counter-attacks, and during the whole time his unfailing cheerfulness and example of personal courage greatly encouraged his officers and men.'
Recommendation date: 2 December 1918

Mention in Despatches

'Sir D Haig?s despatch dated 8th November, 1918, submitting names deserving of special mention.'
Recommendation date: 31 December 1918

Mention in Despatches

'At Flers on the 19th September, and the two following days this Officer was in command of the Hawke?s Bay company of his Battalion. His company was assigned the right half of the objective attacked by the Battalion. His task was peculiarly difficult both because the Brigade on the right failed to advance and because the enemy made a counter attack and set up a barrage just before the time for our attack. The Company repelled the counter attack and cross the barrage and them took and consolidated its objective, though it had to withstand heavy bombing attacks. This Officer early lost two out of the three other Officers with him, and to his courage and determined leading much must be attributed. He was awarded the Military Cross and mentioned in Despatches for his services in Gallipoli and since coming to France he had rendered, most valuable services.'
Recommendation date: 4 January 1917

'In connection with the operations described in General I. Hamilton?s despatch dated 11 December 1915.'
