Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When in charge of his section he held his position until the enemy were within 20 yards. He continually exposed himself with great boldness in organizing parties to cover the withdrawal. When the NCO in charge of a machine-gun became a casualty, he took over the gun and used it with great effect on the enemy as they advanced up to the wire, which he
had placed across the parapet of a strong point, his section alone accounting for ninety of the enemy. His work and conduct throughout the action afforded a most inspiring example to all ranks.'
