Military Medal 'Operations: British Front north of Hebuterne 17th/25th July 1918. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. As a Company stretcher bearer, Private Torrance worked for eight days, during heavy shell fire, in recovering wounded men both of his own and other Companies. On the night 25th/26th July he organised special relays of bearers during very heavy shell fire, and was largely instrumental in recovering our wounded with the utmost despatch. He showed an utter contempt for danger, and although his three companions were killed and he himself blown up
by the same shell and severely shaken, he continued his work until every man had been carried back to the regimental aid post. By his cheerful demeanour he inspired all ranks, while his example at all times has been one of conscientious work and devotion to duty.'
