'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during operations east of Ypres on October 4th 1917. This Officer was in command of a Company and throughout the operations acted with great gallantry. He personally guided his Company through a heavy barrage to its objective and although wounded carried on until the objective was won and consolidated. Throughout 31/2 years of service he has on numerous occasions proved himself to be a courageous and capable Officer. He has always inspired confidence of his men, by his cheerfulness and disregard for danger under difficult and trying conditions.'
