Croix de Guerre (France) 'North West of Ypres: 19th to 23rd October 1917. For conspicuous gallantry in the field. This NCO was in charge of a platoon during the period from the 10th to the 23rd inst: when his Company was holding the left of Battalion sector in the front
line in front Kron Prinz Farm. By his tireless energy and thought for his men his activities both day and night and his exposure during enemy shelling for the purpose of securing the safety of his platoon undoubtedly prevented heavier
casualties occurring in his sector. He showed an absolute disregard for his personal safety during the heaviest of the enemy bombardments and by this and his cheerfulness set a splendid example to all ranks. His devotion to duty during this particularly trying period is beyond all praise.'
