Bar to Military Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the attack on Bancourt on the 30th August. This NCO displayed great courage and initiative in getting sections forward towards our objectives. On reaching the south side of Bancourt much shell and machine gun fire was met and under this continuous fire the Company had to advance up a long slope. After a party led to an officer had been driven back by concentrated shell fire, Sergt Thomas led a mixed platoon and established himself on the crest of the ridge and got in the touch with the flank battalion.'
