Military Medal 'Operations opposite Polderhoek. 27th November to 5th December 1917. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On 3rd December 1917, about noon, when the attack was in progress the advance was held up by heavy machine gun and rifle fire, and this NCO, who was in command of a Lewis gun and team which located an enemy machine gun which was inflicting casualties on our troops, he opened fire on the gun and put it out of action thus enabling the advance to proceed. His brave and prompt action and most efficient use of the weapon under his command undoubtedly saved many casualties, and resulted in the capture of
the enemy gun in question, and in the taking and holding of very valuable ground. Later in the afternoon, about 3pm he dug in his gun in a good position from where he inflicted many casualties on the enemy troops. His gallant and cool behaviour were a splendid example to all.'
