'During operations between 25th August West of Bapaume and 2nd September at Mill Cross east of Fremicourt this Private showed great gallantry and resource in difficult situations. On 2nd September when all the NCOs of his Platoon became casualties he acted as Platoon Sergeant and showed great courage and resource in reorganising the Platoon under machine gun fire. He also superintended the consolidation of the objective in an exposed position and personally reconnoitred and obtained touch with the flanks. His fearless action was of the utmost assistance to his Platoon Commander and greatly facilitated the rapid consolidation of the line.'
