Mentioned in Despatches 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. At Messines on the 7th June and subsequent days this non-commissioned officer led his platoon with great dash and gallantry setting a splendid example to the objective. Notwithstanding the heavy shell fire, he rapidly consolidated his position. Immediately his platoon had dug in he took command of a large wiring party and skillfully and quickly erected an entanglement on the company?s front. During his long service he has served a fine record as a great fighter and a capable leader.'
