Proceeded overseas to France, 23 October 1916; joined 2nd Bn, NZ Rifle Brigade, in the field, 29 October 1916, and posted to D Company. Promoted Lieutenant, 11 January 1917. Awarded Military Cross. Detached to Brigade Class of Instruction, 18 May 1917; rejoined unit, 30 May 1917. Appointed Temporary Captain, 5 July 1917. On leave to United Kingdom, 14 July 1917; rejoined unit from leave, 25 July 1917. Admitted to No 3 NZ Field Ambulance, 11 August 1917 (lacerated wound, right hand; not the result of enemy barbed wire), and discharged to unit same day.
