Mentioned in Despatches 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On the 2nd August 1917 while in command of a platoon at La Basse Ville Sergeant Sullivan held his men together under exceptionally heavy shell fire, although he had previously been buried and
stunned by the shelling. On the following day in the same sector whilst on outpost duty, although rendered unconscious for one hour by the burst of a shell, and in consequence suffering sever pain, he remained on duty in command of his platoon
while the enemy placed an intense bombardment on the position, and held his men together to meet an expected attack. On both occasions he showed
remarkable ability, coolness and leadership, in handling his platoon under the most trying circumstances.'
