Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. By his excellent handling of his trench mortar and skillful observation work he succeeded in preventing several enemy machine guns from firing. Later, on hearing that the infantry were held up by a strong point and had run out of bombs, he collected all available ammunition and advanced his gun to a point from which he could get direct observation. He brought his gun into action at a critical moment and was responsible for the capture of about 40 of the enemy and 6 machine guns. He set a magnificent example of coolness and determination.'
