Military Medal 'For exceptional gallantry. In the attack by Hawke's Bay Company of 2nd Wellington Regiment on the village of La Basse Ville this man was No 2 of a Lewis gun section. Almost at the beginning of the operation by reason of casualties to the crew he assumed command of the section. He did this gallantly and inspired the others by his coolness and bravery. During the enemy counter attack he drove back three determined attacks against the section and then when all the section save him had
become casualties he fought his gun until a party of approximately fifty of the enemy attacked him and got within bombing distance. He retired then bringing back his Lewis gun which by now had been disabled. His gallantry was magnificent.'
