'For extreme gallantry. This man?s section was on the left of the attack when his Company attacked the enemy front line system of hedgerows just north of La Basse Ville on 31st July. All the NCOs of his section and of the section on his right became casualties. Then Stedman showed himself a very gallant and cool soldier. He extricated the remnants of these Company sections from a hopeless position and brought them back to a sound position and led them shortly afterwards forward, reinforcing his Platoon at a critical moment.'
