Military Medal 'For gallantry on August 12th 1917 at Caring Cross Advanced Dressing Station, Ploegsteert Wood. At 10am on this day the enemy heavily shelled the area of the Advanced Dressing Station. A large shell exploded in the entrance to the dressing room, killing two men and wounding three. In spite of the shelling, Private Stainton rushed into the station, which was filled with smoke fumes and flying debris, picked up Private Hoare who was badly wounded, and carried him on his back safety through falling shells to a cellar 500 yards away. He then returned for an ambulance and got Private Hoare away to the next dressing station.'
