Meritorious Service Medal 'At Ypres from 16th to 23rd October 1917 this Battalion runner displayed the very greatest courage and the utmost devotion to duty. As Senior runner he went forward previous to his Battalion going into the line and notwithstanding heavy shell fire, reconnoitred various routes and subsequently he guided the runners under his charge over the ground. From the 19th to 23rd October he continuously carried messages forward to the front line Companies under heavy shell fire, always showing the very greatest coolness and disregard of personal safety. His
great courage and extreme devotion to duty were a magnificent example to others.'
