Meritorious Service Medal 'This NCO has performed the duties of Headquarters Sergeant and Battalion Gas NCO During the recent operations, when the work of bringing rations forward was a difficult task, Staff Sergeant Smith never failed to deliver his rations. During the enforced absence of the Sergeant Major he took over the supervision of the Battalion Carrying parties displaying in all his work consistent devotion and tireless energy. He has continuously shown a cheerful disposition in trying circumstances and has always carried out well and faithfully any task allotted to him.'
