'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in the field near Briastre on the 11th October 1918. When the Company had suffered heavy casualties and had fallen back to a sunken road, this NCO volunteered to go out in front with a stretcher and help carry in the wounded. This he did in daylight under machine gun fire and within a hundred yards of the enemy trenches, going backwards until all the wounded had been carried in. Throughout the operation Cpl Smith showed the utmost contempt of danger and set a magnificent example to all ranks in his Company.'
