Military Medal 'Operations: British Front east and West of Bapaume 25th August/7th September 1918. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the above operations Private Smith acted as Battalion runner. He carried messages forward to the Companies under heavy shell fire and worked day and night under very trying conditions. He maintained a cheerful demeanour and showed a fine example of courage and determination.'
