Meritorious Service Medal 'On the 4th October, 1917, when this battery was under heavy shell fire, all the gunners in this man's subsection were casualties. He carried on with the barrage until another man from another detachment could be spared to assist him. He kept cool throughout, and continued firing in the barrage as though nothing extraordinary had happened.'
