'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the operations in the vicinity of Esnes on the night of 7th/8th October 1918, Private Sinclair was carrying messages practically continuously for four hours between Company and Battalion Headquarters under heavy shell fire mainly directed at a Sunken Road, along which his route lay. At 1.30am when the shell fire was at its height, he volunteered to guide the mess orderlies back to the cooker, although the party had to pass on route through the line of enemy fire. This he did successfully. In the advance on the 8th October, although tired with his exertions of the night previous, he displayed the greatest coolness and energy in carrying messages backwards and forwards all day through enemy barrages.'
