Military Medal 'Gallantry and devotion to duty on the night of 27th/28th July 1916. He was instructed to take a fighting patrol towards the German wire. His instructions were to search for and rescue if possible, the body of Rifleman Woods, wounded and
missing since the night 26/27th July. His patrol was surprised and heavily bombed by the enemy, who were lying in wait, one of his party being killed and 4 wounded. Sergt Simmers returned the bombing drove off the enemy and continued to advance with four men remaining, located and rescued the wounded man who was alive and returned with his party to the starting point.'

Source: London Gazette Date: Bar to Military Medal 'Great gallantry at Flers on 15th September 1916. He was wounded in the arm and in the leg but continued to lead his platoon and helped to consolidate the captured position, only ceasing work when again wounded in the knee.'
