'On 14th June, 1917, at the Le Biset Sector, assumed Command of 3rd Battalion Wellington Regiment, when Lieut-Colonel W.H. Fletcher, had been wounded, and conducted its Operations in that Sector for 21/2 months, with conspicuous success. During that period he continued the work of organising the Battalion which had recently been formed. Major Short left New Zealand with the Main Expeditionary Force, and took part in active operations in Egypt and Gallipoli. He was twice wounded.'
